Windows 10 coming to Lumia phones December

Microsoft has confirmed that it will start rolling out Windows 10 to existing Lumia smartphones from December.

The company conducted a largely triumphant launch event yesterday in which two new flagship smartphones (among other things) were announced. The Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950XL represent the high-end debut of Windows 10 on such a compact form factor.

It won’t just be these new phones that will get a taste of Windows 10, however. Microsoft had already revealed that it would be bringing its latest OS to older Lumia devices, though it didn’t provide any specifics at its October 6 event.

The tech giant did provide a little more information on Facebook following the event, however.

Responding to a request for information on when Windows 10 would be coming to the Lumia 640 XL and phones like it, Microsoft said that “broad availability of Windows 10 on other devices, including mobile phones, will begin rolling out in December.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean that every eligible Windows Phone device will be receiving Windows 10 in December. It’s quite likely that the majority won’t see it until next year.

Microsoft hasn’t provided a comprehensive list of the Lumia devices that will receive the Windows 10 upgrade, but it has said this: “It is our ambition to make an upgrade available for majority of Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1.”

This will apparently exclude devices with less than 8GB of internal memory, and all devices must be running Lumia Denim. Also, Microsoft says that “not every phone will support all possible Windows 10 features.”
