TrustedReviews NewslettersAsus looks set to contend Dell and Vodafone's claim of having the 'first netbook with HSDPA' in the form of the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 because the Eee PC now has such an option, too. Actually that's not strictly true; the Asus Eee PC 901 with 3.75G doesn't have HSDPA, it has HSUPA which is pretty much the same thing, but with faster upload speeds - something that's not of much demand on a mobile phone, but definitely useful on a sub-notebook.
Asus is boasting that it’s HSUPA-fitted 901 should offer download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps an uploads of 2Mbps in addition to some 7.5 hours of battery life making it a great mobile companion. In our testing of the 901 we found real-world use was closer to four hours, so take Asus' claims with a pinch of salt, especially as the HSUPA module will probably eat a reasonable amount of power itself.
Of course there is the further disadvantage that in the UK HSUPA hasn't been adopted to any large degree, so the advantages of the service will only be seen in very in limited areas. Most should be happy simply having nippy download speeds, without having to sacrifice a USB port to a dongle, though.
It's just a matter of pricing now, really. Dell, Asus; your move.

Your 5 hour test was with wifi turned on though, you're unlikely to need that at the same time as HSUPA, it'll be interesting to see which is the most battery efficient.<... more
